Malls…. man… if ever there were a homynymn that’s it. I lived for several years down in Ewing, and Quakerbridge was our BIG mall, and Princeton MarketFair was the boutique mall.
Quakerbridge is what I think of when I think of a mall that’s been around for a while. The anchor stores have switched around a bit. The food court exists, but there are restaurants strewn around the rest of the mall as well. They have that big center location for all the kid holiday photo sessions and a small kid play area. There’s no arcade, though!! I think there used to be one, but the mall clientele tends toward the dangerous youth demographic now, so the arcade became one of those unsafe zones. Compare this to 6 different flavours of the Limited, and you’ve got one split personality shopping experience. They closed their 2 or 3 screen theatre after the big multiplex opened up nearby as well. It’s trying to come back, though. There are a couple of new developments opening up nearby, so I think they’re trying harder.
Princeton MarketFair has been trying to become the boutique mall for the area. There’s a Kids Pottery Barn, Williams Sonoma, some kind of New Hope arty shop… all shopped at by soccer moms in SUVs with nannies. I don’t find much there to do… I’m not a super-niche store guy. Their theatre is still there. I think it’s got between 7 and 10 screens.
Personally I hate the New Jersey Mall phenomenon (sp?). Everywhere ya go, there’s either a strip mall, or a closed mall, or a McMansion development…. grrrrrr… Drives me nuts.
That… and mall rats. I hate mall rats… that’s another discussion.
